Mary Portas splits with wife Melanie Rickey after 17 years together

‘Mary Queen of Shops’ star Mary Portas has split with her wife after being together for 17 years.

Television presenter and retail consultant Mary Portas has revealed that she and her wife Melanie Rickey, who have been together since 2002, have split up.

Portas and Rickey, who have a six-year-old son, converted their civil partnership to a full marriage in 2014 and were one of the first to do so when same-sex marriage was made legal in the UK.

The Sun reports that the pair have spent the past year “consciously uncoupling” and have already sold their £5million home in North West London.

They released a statement saying: “After 17 years together we have decided to separate. There is no one else involved.

“We have spent the last year consciously managing our separation in as good-heartedly, open, and mature a way as possible to ensure a smooth, amicable evolution for us.

“We remain a family and are committed co-parents to three wonderful humans (plus Walter the dog!) who are our priority. We remain good friends, and will share much together going forward.”

Portas and Rickey’s son was conceived through IVF in 2013

Rickey gave birth to son Horatio in 2013. Their son was conceived via IVF, with Mary’s brother as the sperm donor.

“Lawrence was the first one there [with us] and he picked him up and it was just very emotional,” she told The Times of her son’s birth.

“I said to him ‘Thank you’, and he said ‘It’s my pleasure’, and we just held each other. And now, when I look at Horatio, he is a complete mix of [Ms Rickey] and me.”

“Of course, now I know that it could only ever have been Lawrence who was Horatio’s father,” she said.

In 2017, Horatio was shown on Instagram donning a pair of expensive £1,200 Robert Wun shoes.

Dutee Chand, India’s fastest woman, in same-sex relationship with ‘soulmate’

Dutee Chand becomes the first Indian sports star to open up about being in a same-sex relationship.

The 100m sprinter, who holds the title as India’s fastest woman and recently won two silver medals at the 2018 Asian Games, has revealed for the first time details about her relationship.

23-year-old Chand told The Indian Express that she has “found someone who is my soulmate”.

“I believe everyone should have the freedom to be with whoever they decide they want to be with,” she told reporters.

Chand is currently training for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo but has said she wants to focus on her relationship after she has competed.

“I have always supported the rights of those who want to be in a same-sex relationship. It is an individual person’s choice. Currently, my focus is on the World Championships and the Olympic Games but in the future, I would like to settle down with her.”

Chand said she did not want to identify the woman, who is also from her hometown of Chaka Gopalpur in Orissa, as she did not want to make her “the centre of undue attention”.

Chand said the decriminalisation of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code last year had been an inspirational point for her and had encouraged her to speak out for the rights of the LGBT community.

“I have always believed that everyone should have the freedom to love. There is no greater emotion than love and it should not be denied. The Supreme Court of India has also struck down the old law.”

— Dutee Chand

“I believe nobody has the right to judge me as an athlete because of my decision to be with who I want. It is a personal decision, which should be respected. I will continue to strive to win medals for India at international meets.”
